Would adding your own money into a tip jar ADD to people tipping more or should one keep removing the tips?

Would it be more benefical to add your own money to make it seem as if a lot of people are tipping or would it make for more tips to leave very little in the “tip jar” and hope people feel bad and tip more?

Any experience out there with this? Looking to maximize tips in a sandwhich shop (you know, the kind that just has the glass jar out for tips).
