How to manage when I don’t speak the language?

In September, I’m going to Hawaii for graduate school. I figure if I save my money while in school, I can visit Japan, something I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do.

The thing is, how do I get around when all I don’t speak or read a word of Japanese? Would I be able to hold a basic conversation there, or does the average Japanese person know very little English?
