We’ve been asking him to save his money so he can get a place close to our community college,and go to school with grants he is eligible for, which he does want to do. but the money is gone within days, and next month will be 400 $ less because of bank overdraft charges. We have offered to have a joint account with him but he refuses. He feels he is an adult now and should be in control of his finances but he simply cannot manage his money himself, and if we cant help him do it he will remain homeless , jobless and not in school. Please help with any ideas.

Our car died on us and we figure that it will cost more than what the car is worth to fix it. -using DivaCup (menstruation cup) instead of tampons or pads
-doing my own manicures
-buying perishables at 99 cent stores
-not eating out
-buying from sites like hsn.com and overstock.com that constantly lower prices and waiting until there are 1 or 2 of w hat I want in stock to finally purchase it
-walking in NYC instead of taking the subway or bus

Several months ago I used a visa debit card that was linked to my savings account to pay a utility bill over the phone. I expected that only my balance would be used but was able to pay the whole lot (an extra $300) which was not even in my account. The bank immediately started piling on charges and now I owe about $700. How is it that this could happen? Anyone know what my rights are? The reason I had a debit card in the first place was because I am hopeless at managing money and have a poor credit rating.
